The rigging begins! First up is a simple upgrade. Hobie Mirage Drive kayaks come as standard with mesh net side storage pockets. Hooks can easily get tangled up in mesh net, often resulting in the need to cut the mesh. Hobie make a rubber mesh 'hookless' pocket upgrade to replace the mesh net, reducing the risk of fouling your hooks. This blog post runs through how to carry out this upgrade....
Hobie Mirage Drive kayaks come as standard with mesh side pockets. These work perfectly fine..... unless you put a hook anywhere near them! Any angler will know that getting a hook caught up in mesh netting can be a nightmare, often resulting in the need to cut the mesh to free the hook.
Hobie have taken note of this issue for anglers and have produced a pocket made from rubber - the Hookless Pocket (Part No: 78561001). In fact Hobie call them 'Map Pocket Mesh Moulded Hookless'. I brought these from Cornwall Canoes - see here.
These simply fit in the place of the standard mesh net covering.
First unscrew the pocket frame. The frame can then be pulled into its two halves and the mesh removed.
The frame has a number of short plastic spikes and the rubber hookless pocket fits onto these - start at one corner and work your way round to get all the spikes in the holes in the rubber pocket.
Then its just a case of putting the two halves of the frame together and screwing the frame back in place... easy! The left-hand hookless pocket installed....
The right hand hookless pocket installed...
Two hookless pockets ready to go! They look smart and certainly seem better than the standard mesh ones.
I can now use the side pockets to store lures and hooks without too much risk of hooking up into the mesh. I can even use the outside of the pocket to hook lures onto for storage whilst fishing if needed too! A simple upgrade but a very useful one for fishing.
