Newquay Beaches and Harbour

Newquay has several beaches that are popular with surfers when there is a swell running. When there is little or no swell they would make great places to launch a kayak. Parking can be an issue within Newquay itself for the Town Beaches and harbour but parking is available at Porth beach. The harbour, in lee of Newquay headland (Towan Head) and westerly swells, offers the safest launch spot if you can park nearby. Porth beach is a long, narrow sandy inlet facing West. Watch out for fast tidal races off the headland, especially on Spring Tides, as well as rogue swells around the reefs.

Parking: A large council run long-stay car park is located at the top of Porth Beach. A small area of Porth beach itself is allocated as a car park but be sure to get there early to get a space - this is closer to the water so less distance to drag the kayak. Check Cornwall County Council website for the latest charges. A small council run long-stay car park is located beside Newquay Harbour - get there early in the summer to ensure parking. Check Cornwall County Council website for the latest charges.

Species: Pollack, Bass and Wrasse around the Newquay headland. Whiting, Codling, Plaice, Dabs, Flounder, Gurnards, and the occasional Smoothhound and Ray over clean ground. Possible big Conger if anchored over rough ground at the headland. Mackerel & Garfish in season. Possible Mullet in and around the harbour. Good Pollack, Bass and the occasional Black Bream can be caught on the reefs further off the headland.

Nearest Tackle Shops: Atlantic Angling Centre at Newquay and Sling Your Hook at Newquay
