Saltash

Saltash is a town located on the west side of the River Tamar, on the border between Cornwall and Devon. Saltash is the location of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge and the Tamar Bridge, connecting Cornwall and Devon by rail and road. Launching gives access to the central section of the River Tamar. The Tamar is tidal and very strong tides flow in and out as the tides floods and ebbs. As a result kayak fishing is not recommended for beginners and those not familiar with the Tamar and its tidal conditions. A launch should be timed with an incoming tide if your planning to paddle up river. Likewise a paddle down river should ideally be timed with a falling tide and paddling back timed with the incoming tide. Boat traffic can be heavy in the Tamar so keep an eye on other water users, especially if fishing at anchor. The Tamar is predominantly mud and muddy sand although some patches of rocky ground and rubble can be found in the main channel. Launching is possible from several locations along the riverside, with slipways at Town Quay and Jubilee Green.

Parking: Limited roadside parking is available near Town Quay. A council run long stay car park is located at Jubilee Green.

Species: Codling, Dabs, Flounder, Gurnards and Whiting are all possible. Big Cod have been caught in the Tamar in the winter months. Bass may also show. Big Conger Eels have been caught in the Tamar and are a possibility if fishing at anchor. Thornback rays can be caught if fishing at anchor. Mackerel in season.
