Hobie Livewell - Overview & Installation

Live baiting is one of my favourite ways to fish on the kayak and it can be a killer method for some species. Keeping baitfish alive for long periods of time on a kayak has previously consisted of chucking fish in a bucket of water with an air pump, however they never last very long. Catching a fresh bait fish when you need to re-bait is very hit and miss too. Thankfully the struggle is no more with the Hobie Livewell!!

It has been a long wait for a break in the weather. Others were busy so it would be a rare solo session on a local river estuary. The plan was to target Mackerel, to stock up the freezer with bait, but there was also a chance of Herring too. If i could catch some fresh bait then i'd be trying my luck for a Ray too...

Mackerel & Pilchards - 13th March 2016

Its that time of year. The big spring tides during March usually see big shoals of mackerel come inshore and with an empty freezer, a session was planned. The forecast was looking superb for once, with light winds and sun. Early Sunday morning saw Gary, Andrew and myself tucked away in a forgotten corner of Cornwall setting up the kayaks for a day on the water.

A weather window was spotted. Its the first chance i've had to get out on the water this year due to university commitments but the weather was looking great so the chance couldn't be missed. The session would coincide with the weekend 'Super tide' - an exceptionally big tide producing the lowest tides for a decade and an associated big tidal range. Time for some fun in the Tempo!

The Penzance Kayak Fishing Species Hunt was unfortunately knocked on the head due to a lack of competitors. Richard had travelled down to fish the comp, so with it cancelled we planned a session in the hope of some reward for his long journey! Little did we know that we were in for a fantastic day of species fishing.....

The Penzance Kayak Fishing Species Hunt had unfortunately been cancelled for the weekend with the untimely arrival of the remnants of tropical storm Bertha. Mark, Si, Richi and Steve were already down here for the competition so with all but perfect conditions forecast for Thursday we planned a day out from Sennen – the preferred venue for the now cancelled competition. We were in for a great day on the water….

Spring Mackerel

The weather has settled down and the sunshine is warm…. Spring has arrived and with it the mackerel have moved inshore to chase shoals of sand eels. The plan was to have a session afloat to hopefully find a few mackerel to stock up the bait freezer for future fishing trips. Me, Kieren and his friend Dwyer headed to a mark on the Lizard Peninsula in search of the shoals. Kieren and Dwyer shared the Hobie Outfitter Tandem and I used the RTM Abaco. The forecast was great, the sea was glassy calm and the tide would be pushing. All was looking well for catching mackerel.
