Fitting a Ram Ball Mount
Ram Mounts can be used for a wide range of applications and are particularly useful on kayaks for positioning fish finders, rod holders, transducer mounts and just about anything else which you can attach a ram ball mount too.
I have used a Ram mount to mount my Lowrance Elite 4x DSI fish finder to my Teksport Xplore 330. Ram produce an adaptor with a 1" Ram ball that fits directly into the quick release mechanism on the 4x DSI. This attaches to a kayak mounted 1" Ram ball with a 2.5" diameter round base via a double socket arm as shown in the photos.
I have attached the round base to my kayak using marine tri-fold pop rivets, smearing them in a dab of clear silicon before pushing them into the drilled holes and compressing them. I also applied a good coating of silicon to the round base of the ram ball before popping all the rivets to create a waterproof seal. I was able to reach inside the kayak to where the rivets were and placed small washers (also smeared with clear silicon) over the rivets, against the hull, before the rivets were compressed - this will help to increase their holding strength.
The fish finder can now be positioned at whatever angle i desire simply by loosening the screw on the double socket arm, positioning the fish finder and then tightening the screw again. Check out Ram mounts website for more mounting options which you could incorporate onto your kayak - with a little thought many accessories can be mounted using Ram mounts.
