Lightweight Storage OptionThere are times when you don't need to take lots of gear on a kayak fishing session. Be it an evening lure fishing for bass, or an early morning bream fishing trip, sometimes you just don't need to take much gear! In a few recent sessions i have left the H-Crate, Fish Finder (with heavy battery) and any other non-essentials at home to keep things lightweight and minimalistic. However, i still found i needed somewhere to keep my essential pieces of tackle/gear close to hand. Chucking things straight in the tank-well isn't the driest option, neither is storing items in the side pockets. I can keep keep some gear in the centre Twist-N-Seal hatch however i tend to store bait in there inside a Hobie Deep Gear Bucket. The Hobie Vantage Seat Accessory Bag was the perfect solution. It attaches to the Vantage Seat found on newer Hobie Kayaks and offers a storage space raised off the deck to keep the contents dry. Everything is kept close to hand within easy reach of the seat too. The bag is constructed from a water resistant material which makes the bag splash-proof but not 100% waterproof. This isn't too much of a worry though as i only want to keep the worst of the splash/rain off the contents. The bag measures approx. 8in x 8in x 3in and has a 'carbon-weave' type look to it with a reflective strip across it's front. The bag attaches to the frame of the Vantage Seat using 4 velcro straps. The top opening features a clear plastic 'window' to allow you to see into the contents of the bag. I'm not too sure how useful this is as it will be behind you during use. Perhaps handy if you sit side-saddle and can look into the bag and locate the items you need before reaching in. The top opens with a double zipper. Inside is a larger main compartment with a smaller zippered mesh compartment. The small compartment is handy for storing your vehicle keys/phone/money etc. (in an Aquapac or similar to keep them 100% dry) or small spools of line, fishing weights etc. The main compartment has just enough room for a Plano Waterproof 3600 (Medium) Sized Tackle Box and a few other bits of tackle. There is also a snap-link tether for clipping gear too. Alternatively it makes a great place to store your lunch and a drink! The bag could easily take a waterproof jacket/cag which could be useful on days where you know the weather will change. It will also be useful for when i am using the Hobie Livewell and require additional tackle storage for the kayak as i won't have my crate in the tank-well.
The Hobie Vantage Seat Accessory Bag can be purchased from Cornwall Canoes and costs a modest £34.95 at the time of writing. A fairly simple storage solution but incredibly handy! |
