![]() With a storm battering the cornish coast, gusting at over 60mph, the kayak was staying firmly on dry land. Even with the howling wind i decided to find a nice sheltered creek on a local river to target one of my favourite fish - Flounder! When they are feeding they can be great fun to catch and give a great fight on light gear.... I use 2 Daiwa Tournament Linear 2.75lb carp rods matched with Shimano 5000 RE limited edition fixed spools loaded with 12lb berkley big game line for floundering. After digging a few ragworms the tide started to push and out went the rigs. I use a running ledger on one rod and a 2 hook fixed paternoster on the other - its surprising how some days you will catch all the fish on the single rig and other days its the 2 hooks rig that best - so using both gives the flounders a choice....well thats my theory anyway!! With the weather being very mild for december the crabs were out in full force - the baits were not lasting more than a few minutes but after an hour or so of persisting the first bite resulted in a spirited little fight and the first flounder of around 1lb on the double rig. Shortly after another flounder the same size on the single rig. Out went the single rig again loaded with small wriggly worms, it wasnt long something was tugging on the end, i gave it some line and let it sit on the bait, soon after it took off and i had a decent fight on my hands. The result - a plump flounder weighing 1lb 12oz - not a monster but the biggest of the day. No more bites after that and the crabs continued to persist so made the decision to pack up. All flounders were released to be caught when they are bigger. An enjoyable couple of hours and with some time on my hands i had a drive about looking for places from which i could launch the kayak . I found a lovely spot that i will be hopefully be investigating some time soon to target flounder from the kayak if i can brave the cold! It also looks tasty for targeting Gilthead Bream next summer - time will tell!
